Architectural Conservation students from the School of Architecture of the then University of Natal carried out extensive fieldwork during 1987. 108 buildings at Rhodes Village were assessed, and 76 eventually listed in terms of exacting criteria.
The project was published that year as Rhodes: towards the conservation of a unique South African town, edited by Prof Walter Peters.
This page from the book sets out the five criteria for inclusion in the list. The featured Building Evaluation Sheet is for the Dutch Reformed Church. This building gained 87 points, and was classified as grade “A”, a building of “major importance which should be preserved”.
